Sheep Creek Hatchery was built in 1980 four miles south of downtown Juneau. The facility was originally designed to incubate up to 40 million pink and/or chum salmon for commercial fishermen. In 1986 the Coho Annex facility was added to develop a coho broodstock source for what was eventually to become Macaulay Salmon Hatchery. The hatchery was converted into a coho rearing facility to augment the Macaulay Salmon Hatchery production from 1998 till 2014 and in 2015 the hatchery was decommissioned and the permit relinquished to ADF&G.
